The lyrics for “Untamed” find their inspiration in C.S. Lewis’ The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe. In this particular volume of Lewis’ collection, The Chronicles of Narnia, four children enter the magical world of Narnia. While there, three of the children meet Mr. and Mrs. Beaver, two residents of the land, who speak to them of Aslan, “the great Lion” who is “the King...the Lord of the whole wood.” When asked by the youngest child if Aslan is a safe lion, Mr. Beaver responds, “Safe?...Who said any-thing about safe? ‘Course he isn’t safe. But he’s good. He’s the King, I tell you.’” At the end of the story, the children remember more of Mr. Beaver’s description of Aslan: “He’s wild, you know. Not like a tame lion.”
Lewis’ portrayal of Aslan bears striking resemblance to the Bible’s de-scription of God. God is the Almighty King of creation. While He is a good King, He is a King to be feared. In this sense, God is not safe; He is not tame.
To complement Lewis’ imaginative writing throughout The Chronicles of Narnia, I have attempted to craft the words with a corresponding childlike imagery that still maintains the gravity of the message.
lyrics
Careful where you take a bow;
Beware not of monsters,
Nor evil ones unseen
Who scare all the monsters.
Fear the Lion Who is King:
He’s there – and stronger!
To Him devotion vow,
Who bears all the honor.
He’s not safe!
